Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) Activities:
Physical and occupational therapy is provided to children at Imperial Valley Center for Exceptional Children (IVCEC) who have a medical need for these treatment services. Physical and occupational therapy focuses on helping children to be independent in such areas as getting around, getting in and out of a wheelchair, walking, feeding, dressing, staying clean and neat, and home skills. Our therapists work in teams that include doctors, nurses, teachers and other school staff, speech therapists, and psychologists.
Eligibility:
MTU services do not require financial eligibility, and not every CCS client is eligible for MTU services. Two groups of children that are served by the MTU:
1. Children with a muscular, musculoskeletal, or neuromuscular disease. Examples include, but are not limited to,
· cerebral palsy
· poliomyelitis
· muscular dystrophies
· myasthenis
· osteogenesis imperfecta
· arthrogryposis
· rheumatoid arthritis
· amputation
· contractures resulting from burns
2. Children under two years of age who have certain neurological findings that suggest a high chance that they may have physical disability that is eligible for MTU services, but who do not have symptoms.
