Base Hospital FAQs

To help the public better understand the current base hospital situation, here are some FAQ’s focused on what a base hospital is, what services a base hospital provides and what this current situation means for the Imperial County.

A base hospital is designated to provide guidance and direction for advanced life support services to ambulance and fire station personnel responding to calls in the field also known as pre-hospital care.

Advanced life support (ALS) refers to medical procedures and medication used to treat but not limited to cardiac arrest, shock, stroke and trauma.

Basic Life Support (BLS) refers to the type of care provided to anyone experiencing life-threatening injuries or illness like cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, obstructed airway, or severe trauma.

Without a base hospital no advance life support (ALS) services can be performed, but basic life support services (BLS) can still be provided during pre-hospital care.  This does not mean that local hospital emergency rooms will close or are unable to take patients.

Base hospital services continue to be provided by El Centro Regional Medical Center. Changes to the base hospital system are being discussed among our two local hospitals and the Imperial County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency to ensure that there is no disruption in the level of emergency care provided to the community.

Yes, emergency transportation is and will continue to be available. Any individual with a medical emergency should continue to dial 911 if they need assistance and will be transported to the nearest hospital that can take care of their emergency medical need.

Members of the public, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders are strongly encouraged to visit official sources for updated information regarding hospital services.
