The Imperial County Environmental Health participates on the Imperial County Hazardous Emergency Assistance Team (HEAT) in providing health and safety expertise in the containment and cleanup of accidental spills and or releases.
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control was appointed the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) for Imperial County in January 2005. The Unified Program is the consolidation of six state environmental programs into one program under the authority of a Certified Unified Program Agency. The CUPA inspects businesses or facilities that handle or store hazardous materials; generate hazardous waste; own or operate aboveground or underground storage tanks; and comply with the California Accidental Release Prevention (CalARP) Program. The CUPA Program is instrumental in accomplishing this goal through education, community and industry outreach, inspections and enforcement. The California Department of Public Health Medical Waste Management Program (MWMP) regulates the generation, handling, storage, treatment, and disposal of medical waste by providing oversight for the implementation of the Medical Waste Management Act (MWMA). The MWMP permits and inspects all medical waste off-site treatment facilities and medical waste transfer stations. In addition to the treatment methods specifically allowed in the MWMA, there are more than a dozen alternative medical waste treatment technologies approved for use in California.
